- Insulate pipes, especially those close to outside walls, attics or crawl spaces.
- Wrap pipes with heat tape or thermostatically-controlled heat cables. Use products approved by an independent testing organization.
- Use caulk or insulation to seal air leaks. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes.
- Check weather stripping and other sealants around exterior doors.
- Keep exterior doors closed. Doors propped open – even for a few minutes – can quickly freeze any exposed water supply lines.
- Disconnect outdoor hoses and cover spigots where hoses are attached.
- Turn OFF water to exterior faucets and sprinkler systems.
- Open interior doors to utility rooms.
- Allow warm air to circulate through unheated areas with exposed or uninsulated pipes.
- Turn ON both hot and cold faucets near outside walls. Allow a small trickle of water to run during the night.
- Identify the location of all shutoff valves. Prepare to stop the flow of water as soon as possible should a pipe burst.
